Abstract:

Rhododendron belonging to Ericaceae family composes nearly one thousand species. Rhododendron Ponticum L. flowers and leaves were extracted with hexane, dichloromethane and methanol successively. β-sitosterol and ursolic acid were isolated from the hexane and dichloromethane extracts of flowers respectively. While the uvaol was isolated from the methanol extract, α-amyrin and β-amyrin as a mixture and β-sitosterol were obtained from the hexane extract of R. Ponticum L. leaves. In vitro antioxidant activity of the several extracts obtained from the R. ponticum L. leaves and flowers compared to those of α-tocopherol, BHA and BHT were assessed. Methanol extracts of flowers and leaves exhibited the significant antioxidant activities.
