Abstract:

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is an opportunistic pathogen that grows as a biofilm on implanted medical devices. Attachment, colonization and biofilm formation are regulated by bacterial quorum sensing (QS). Naturally derived compounds (e.g. essential oils) with QS inhibitory activity have shown good pathogen control. We applied surface treatment strategies with an oil extract from cinnamon, cinnamaldehyde, in electrospun fibres that inhibited biofilm formation.
