This paper examines how the puffed rice (a Bengali street food) purchased by Mrs. Das, a character in the title story of Jhumpa Lahiri’s short story collection Interpreter of Maladies, reflects her personality and emotional state. By applying the concept borrowed from the Hindu culture— how food consumed by an individual affecting his or her personality—readers gain an understanding of Mrs. Das’ character and the cause of her betrayal of her husband.
