Abstract:
Recent changes that Catalan nationalism has experienced regarding its claims of independence have deep and complex historical roots, making it a difficult to understand the process. This paper analyzes the context in which these changes have occurred with Barcelona’s El Born market as a case of study. On the one hand, it focuses in the changes suffered by the narratives within the past few years regarding the archaeological remains found under the market. On the other hand, it studies the reactions to an exhibition held in this place in 2016 about the Franco dictatorship’s impunity. The result of this analysis is a complex, interrelated game of political and ideological appropriations. In this game, the attempts to appropriate a place with so much historical symbolism are deeply intertwined with the most recent collective memories of the Barcelona’s citizens.
