Abstract:

Alt criticism is not easy. It is often an uncomfortable undertaking that requires (if it is to be done well) an enormous range of knowledge and a focused, neutral sense ofjudgment. In suggesting that it requires enormous knowledge I am of course tacitly endorsing the idea of the 'expert' who knows all about past art, and thus all about past artistic standards, and who can therefore be relied on to tell the rest of us how and why a work is good, when we are not able to experience it on our own. The idea of a critic as one who stands between a work of art and the receiver of that work, and mediates the relationship, is problematic for many reasons.
