Abstract:

This article aims at presenting an experimental creation called “Comic Relay” which was attempted in the 1950s by six famous cartoonists in Taiwan. The attempt of the comic experiment was made during Taiwan's White Terror, which was also a period that the state executed its censorship over publications. Paradoxically, comics industry in Taiwan reached its high tide rather than been totally suppressed in the era of political oppression. This article indicates that the experimental creation of “Comic Relay” represents flexible tactics of popular culture adopted by cartoonists during White Terror. The purpose of those cartoonists were not only trying to escape the censorship but also to transform the anti-communist discourse into heroic narration in comics
