Abstract:

Several serious games for teaching software engineering and science courses in an Asian institution of higher education, have been developed but fell short of expectations in their engagement and learning provision. To prevent this from occurring in the next serious game, the development cycle was reversed: game design first, and the instructional design second. In the resultant game’s pilot in a software systems design course, its engagement and imparting of new skills and knowledge were markedly superior to the previous games. In a survey following the game pilot, the test subjects stated that not only did they enjoy the game, but they also were strongly satisfied with the degree of learning they achieved. This paper details the development process of the serious game and findings of its pilot.
