Abstract:

One of the consequences of the progress towards more powerful smart phones capable of operating at higher and higher data rates and running increasingly sophisticated software is that battery life is again becoming a major issue for mobile users.

In this paper we address this issue around a specific use case of mobile users being able to switch a call from audio to video or vice versa during the same sessions. Although this is off cited use case for mobile phone users, it has yet to be supported by the underlying systems. This paper not only offers a novel solution of seamless connectivity through codec switching by using an IMS server in real time, but also resolves the crucial issue of power management.
