Abstract:

This paper describes an approach to self-power a game controller using the Faraday Principle of Electromagnetic Energy. The self-powered controller takes advantage of the movement of the user in motion-intensive video games, e.g. continuous pressing of buttons in a 100m sprinting game or the swinging action in a tennis video game. The kinetic energy of the user is converted into electric energy by the use of
electromagnetic induction. The electrical energy harvesting circuit consists of a copper coil that houses a mobile permanent magnet. The experimental setup includes AC-DC rectification circuit with a capacitor and an energy storage device. The load is the micro-controller that generates the desired signal to the wireless communication. This paper uses radio frequency for wireless communication. Magnetic reed switches that will be triggered at the proximity of the permanent magnet are implemented at the sides of the controller to replace the traditional left and right buttons. These allows the user to perform dual functions when playing the game, and that is to self-power the controller and also sending the action commands to the game software without pressing any button. A computer game software is created to receive the data from the controller and perform some simple game actions. The conclusion of this paper is a controller that is self-powered while the user is playing game with it.
