Abstract: The Richards equation is a non-linear partial differential equation which describes the movement of water in unsaturated soil. In the present paper a numerical solution for one dimensional horizontal flow of water in unsaturated soil has been obtained by using quadratic B-Spline finite element method for a specific set of boundary and initial conditions. The time derivative is approximated using backward difference scheme after the discretization of time domain. On applying Galerkin Finite Element Method the resulting system of non-linear algebraic equations are solved using least square method. A computer program is prepared to obtain the required numerical results which are compared with results from one of the analytical solution to test the accuracy and efficiency of the derived equation.
