Abstract: Air pollution is a major problem in Sri Lanka due to rapid urbanization, development, and starting of new industries. The most obvious impact of air pollution is related to health problems associated with poor air quality and the corresponding cost of medical care and treatments. Therefore it is important to identify the level of the air pollution in cities and take necessary actions to improve the quality of air. The objective of this study is to propose a new mathematical model to support decision to rank the areas in urban Colombo in air quality context. The study area is based on the geographical area governed by Colombo Municipal Council. Ranking system can be considered as a multi criteria decision problem. In this problem five major factors such as industries, population density, traffic intensity, natural sources and weather conditions were considered. Further major categories were sub divided. Since this process consists of imprecise data, fuzzy analytical hierarchical process was applied. The weights of the criteria were obtained using Chang’s extent analysis method and geometric mean method of Burkley’s. These weights were suitably adjusted to discover the new weights in the proposed model. The alternatives were ranked using TOPSIS method. Simulations were done using a MATLAB program.
