Abstract: Plantaris muscle has a small muscular belly which originates from the lower end of lateral supracondylar line and the oblique popliteal ligament above the origin of lateral head of the gastrocnemius. It has a small fusiform belly, 7-10 cm in length, which joins with the medial head of the gastrocnemius muscle and finally inserts into the tendoachilis. Rarely, the plantaris muscle is absent, unilaterally or bilaterally. The origin and insertion as a complete tendon increases the importance of this vestigial muscle which is used clinically in tendon grafting. This present study on plantaris muscle in 18 adult human cadavers which also includes tendinous origin and insertion of a plantaris muscle on the right leg in a 42-year-old male cadaver. This report may be important for the clinicians during tendon grafting.
