Abstract: This study explores how the mere use of online English learning material will motivate learners. The online material used in this study is ATR CALL BRIX. Twenty undergraduate, English education major students at Osaka Kyoiku University (Japan) participated in this study. They were expected to take a mini-version of TOEIC (Test of English for International Communication) four times at various intervals and also to try studying English using ATR CALL BRIX. The experimenters did not directly teach English to the participants but just conducted the tests during classes. The relation between participants’ answers to the questionnaire that they answered before the first mini test and the time that they spent on studying with ATR CALL BRIX was analyzed. Also, some of the participants were interviewed about the results of the analyses and educational use of ICT. The possibility was found that using ICT itself is not effective in motivating learners, but in some aspects it would work as a good motivator.
