Abstract:

The opportunity that students have to learn in the classroom is often referred to as the most important predictor of their achievement. However, some students in introductory computer science courses have found it difficult to learn the material that is being taught, and this problem has had a significant negative impact on the retention rate in Computer Science programs. In this proposal, we introduce a state-of-the art classroom support system that is based on just-in-time class interventions and after-class support. Unlike other traditional teaching assistance tools, such as Power Point sliders and clickers which provide limited communication in class, the proposed system is designed to pinpoint the weak points of students’ comprehension based on Individual Learning Objects (ILOs) and provide just in-time treatment during class time. Also, the proposed system maximizes the role of the mentor in after-class support by providing the list of the students’ ILO weaknesses to the mentor, which allows the mentor to pinpoint the weaknesses of each poorly performing student.

In addition to introductory computer science courses, this system can be extended to any introductory Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) courses. Also the web-services and client-server technology built into on the proposed system will allow any STEM educator to access and use the system via the Internet. Therefore, we believe that our proposed system is a student focused approach that will provide sustainability, extensibility, and portability to the STEM education programs.
