Abstract: In recent years, there has been a huge popularity in the latest generation of Web 2.0 tools. One category of the Web 2.0 tools is podcast. Podcast can be defined as the digital media files valued for supplementary or whole course materials. Users can listen to related podcast on any device, at anytime, anywhere. Podcast and video podcast (shortly vodcast) can be consumed on computers (e.g., using Windows Media Player), or downloaded to portable MP3/MP4 players to listen/watch on the go anywhere. The main object of this research project is to review the most important concepts in podcast and its applications. Moreover, this review aims to show podcast’s effects in education and other areas. Within the scope of this study, the first stage is defining podcast, examining its effects and acceptance, designating its usage areas, and choosing a best podcast in classes. In the second stage, this paper organizes and classifies the literature on podcast in order to facilitate future research. The review covers 56 peer-reviewed journal articles from 26 journals published between 2005 and 2012. The resulting framework summarizes the progress in podcast research and provides future research directions.
