Abstract:
Problem-based Learning (PBL) as a mode of instruction challenges students to acquire new understanding through the use of prior knowledge coupled with some subject matter instruction in order to solve a problem. Through solving the problem, new knowledge and understanding of foundational principles are constructed. This paper represents action research using PBL to activate knowledge acquisition in a unique introductory data mining course. This pedagogical approach has enabled a wide array of students to successfully learn data mining, whether they possess an extensive computing background or not. The PBL instruction described in this paper accomplishes the task of teaching non-expert students how to mine data for Association Rules using students’ prior knowledge of spreadsheet applications and basic math. The objective of the course is to prepare students with necessary knowledge to apply data mining techniques in whatever career path they choose.
