Abstract:

We report on a project to enhance wealth of geographic information available in historical gazetteer. The information in these gazetteers is fundamental for our understanding of (historic) patterns of movement of the expeditioners in space and time, but the information is in the form of natural language text following some weakly content structure making it difficult to exploit well. With the advancement of new geospatial data handling techniques and wider availability of data we can enhance these gazetteers with an aim to geocode the localities that are described as “Not Located” in it. The tools that we use for the solution are a mix of natural language parsing, spatial ontologies and ontological tagging.
