Abstract: Majority of South African Information Technology students in education are facing challenges in performing query statements from tables stored in Database Management System (DBMS). This article explores the configuration of SQL statements in accessing DBMS. To enhance student teachers’ understanding of the SQL, we began by laying the foundation of the structure of a relational database system, and the objects it contains (such as tables). The concept of where data and/or the information is stored was explained and how the table is uniquely identified. This paper is designed to assist students on how to read from and add data to a table in SQL. The Select statement is the most basis for most SQL queries of a table result. If one wants to get data out of database to display or use it for some other purposes, one would probably going to use Select statement.
