Abstract: With grants from the State of Texas, the National Science Foundation and the U.S. Department of Education, we use an annual STEM challenge to engage and attract local students to STEM fields. Students are introduced to our programs by participating in the STEM Challenge. After joining UHCL, students have opportunities to be hired as peer mentors and to help with designing and producing other grant activities including the STEM Challenge. Upon graduation, they return as judges or sponsors of the challenge. As STEM professionals, these alumni have returned with their companies to job fairs and hired our students into the workforce.
In this paper we share the results of our experience and the progression of the challenges over the course of six years. We have seen positive results that are shared in this paper, and we hope this experience is helpful to others.
