Abstract: Massive Open Online Courses or MOOCs have been increasingly popular in recent decade as a platform extending distance learning to the global basis. MOOCs have been well adopted in various countries and continents such as USA, Europe, and China and have been regarded as new training options for employees in many firms. To some this can pose a threat to higher education institutions; however, it can mean great opportunities at the same time. The purpose of this study, therefore, is to provide a comprehensive review of MOOCs characteristics in Thailand, as compared to those offered in international platforms. Furthermore, in light of the future of higher education, we then discuss opportunities and challenges MOOCs may bring to Thai’s traditional higher education system.
