Abstract: In this study, the university coordinator taught and supervised an early childhood education seminar and internship for 14 interns placed in childcare programs. The coordinator had one on-site observation with each intern and watched one of his or her lessons on videotape. The coordinator analyzed observation notes from the on-site visit and the videotape to determine which technique was best for meeting each of the following goals. 1.) Understanding the context of the urban placement sites; 2.) providing information to students to help them improve their practice and 3.) helping students become reflective practitioners. The pros and cons of both techniques will be presented along with recommendations for how and when to use each technique to improve early childhood teacher education in urban programs.
