Abstract:
The predominant fingerprint patterns and minutiae among Puthai, Thaisoo and Thaiyoo tribes in the Northeast of Thailand were investigated. A hundred subjects of each tribe aged between 18-60 years old were studied. The fingerprints were collected on both hands by rolling technique. The fingerprint patterns and the characteristics of minutiae were classified according to Henry fingerprint classification. The results showed that plain whorl was the most frequent pattern found on the right hand of Puthai (45.6{6e6090cdd558c53a8bc18225ef4499fead9160abd3419ad4f137e902b483c465}) and Thaisoo (49.0{6e6090cdd558c53a8bc18225ef4499fead9160abd3419ad4f137e902b483c465}) while radial loop (53.8{6e6090cdd558c53a8bc18225ef4499fead9160abd3419ad4f137e902b483c465}) was the predominant pattern of Thaisoo. For left hand side, ulnar loop (41.8{6e6090cdd558c53a8bc18225ef4499fead9160abd3419ad4f137e902b483c465}), plain whorl (49.0{6e6090cdd558c53a8bc18225ef4499fead9160abd3419ad4f137e902b483c465}) and ulnar loop (54.3{6e6090cdd558c53a8bc18225ef4499fead9160abd3419ad4f137e902b483c465}) were the most frequent patterns in Puthai, Thaisoo and Thaiyoo, respectively. The fingerprint patterns in each finger of all tribes were then statistically compared. Interestingly, the presence of radial loop on thumb, index and ring finger of right hand and ulnar loop on thumb and ring finger of left hand differentiated Thaiyoo from the rests. The characteristic examination of minutiae showed that bifurcation was the most frequently found in all tribes followed by deviated break and ridge ending. However, the characteristic of minutiae cannot be used to individually specify the tribe as no statistic differences among them were found.
