Abstract:
Laboratories worldwide are under significant pressure to implement a quality management system. ISO/IEC 17025 is the global quality standard for testing and calibration laboratories and states that validations studies are necessary to confirm the fulfillment of particular requirements of a specific intended use. Hexagon OBTI validation study for human blood screening of samples collected at crime scenes in Distrito Federal - Brazil showed positive results in whole blood dilutions up to 1:1.000. Aged samples tested positive in dilutions up to 1:250, for samples not stored under low temperatures. Nevertheless, whole blood positive results must be taken with due regard as hook effect may interfere. This work also investigated the influence of Luminol in collected samples, that showed no effect on results. Likewise, it was noted that soaps and bleaches contamination decrease test sensitivity.
