Abstract: Student suicide is considered to be a great loss to the family and to society, as well. Cases are reported from every corner of the country. Despite the fact, no such study has been published. The aim of the present study was to retrospectively analyse various aspects of student-suicide cases done at All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, during the one-year period (from September 2012 to August 2913). Autopsy reports were studied and data were analysed as per the demographic profile, method resorted, reason behind suicide, and socioeconomic status of the cases. Total case was 69 (31 male and 38 female). The most common age group of the victim was 16-20 years (n=44, 64{6e6090cdd558c53a8bc18225ef4499fead9160abd3419ad4f137e902b483c465}) while age range was 8 to 30 years. Most of the incidences occurred during the month of March to July. Hanging (n=62, 90{6e6090cdd558c53a8bc18225ef4499fead9160abd3419ad4f137e902b483c465}), followed by poisoning (n=7, 10{6e6090cdd558c53a8bc18225ef4499fead9160abd3419ad4f137e902b483c465}) were the only two methods resorted. The main reason behind suicide was an academic failure (n=19, 28{6e6090cdd558c53a8bc18225ef4499fead9160abd3419ad4f137e902b483c465}). A suicide note was found only in 13 cases (19{6e6090cdd558c53a8bc18225ef4499fead9160abd3419ad4f137e902b483c465}). This study suggests that, it is mainly the academic pressure to which student ultimately succumbs. Students mainly opt for hanging to commit suicide.
