Abstract: Thermo-mechanical characteristics of kaolin clay
under different temperature conditions (5˚C, 15˚C, 40˚C) were
investigated using a modified oedometer apparatus. In this study,
preconsolidated kaolin samples (φ6 cm x 2 cm height and φ6 cm
x 10 cm height) were used to perform the consolidation tests
under different pressures and temperatures. In addition, the
shear wave velocity measurements of the samples were conducted
using bender elements installed in the apparatus. At higher
temperature, higher apparent preconsolidation pressure was
observed, while the compression index values increased with
increasing temperature. The investigation of shear stiffness
showed that shear modulus values at 40˚C were large in
comparison with the values at 5˚C.
