Abstract: Soil is one of the important components in the ecosystem. Soil controls demography and as well as economics of the area. Natural, periodic floods affect more on soil, vegetation, crops and as well as human properties and life. The present study area is a small watershed area known as Benni halla which comes under Dharwar and Gadag districts of northern part of Karnataka state in Southern India. The study area falls under tropical region which is largely affected by monsoon which influences the agro based economy. Floods depend on many factors like atmospheric condition topography, climate, and nature of river basin, soil characters, land cover and land use pattern. India is the most flood affected nation in the world after Bangladesh as per published by Vinod K Sharma 2010 [2]. The present study aims to explain new soil sampling method devised to collect undisturbed soil core samples in the periodic flooding regions of Benni halla area. In this method the soil samples are collected before and after the flood using Global Positioning System (GPS) instruments. The description of core soil sampler is discussed in detail in this paper. In each location two core soil samples one in the Benni halla stream and another off the stream were collected. The undisturbed core soil samples are divided into top and bottom soil cores. This top and bottom samples were analyzed to study soil chemistry variations in pre and post flood seasons. A detailed methodology of soil core sampling and preparations for chemical analysis are discussed in detail. Soil chemical analysis data were analyzed by using paired t-test method. This method of statistical approach is to find out the periodic effects of flood on soil.
