Abstract:
Cardiorespiratory fitness is typically estimated by standard submaximal exercise tests which include extrapolation of the heart rate: work rate relationship to an estimated maximal heart rate. Recently validated methods involve assessment of the ratings of perceived exertion (RPE) during exercise testing, and application of the RPE to self-regulate incremental bouts of exercise. This allows the individual to control intensity according to pre-determined RPE levels. The following describes data to show how these methods can be used as effectively as heart rate to estimate cardiorespiratory fitness and prescribe exercise intensity in sedentary and clinical participants.

Keywords: rating of perceived exertion (RPE), testing, perceptually-regulated exercise, cardiorespiratory fitness
