Abstract: Functional pain syndromes, cross multiple disciplines affecting more than 25% of the world-wide population. Inflammation is not a typical pathway for a functional diseases such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Painful Bladder Syndrome, fibromyalgia and others but one of the possible explanations is the neural plasticity associated with nociception. The main focus of this report is to explore the novel therapeutic mechanisms for visceral pain. Understanding of the neuronal reorganization associated with visceral pain will be the basis of translational efforts to modulate functional disorders with ultimate goal to develop new therapies.
Keywords: visceral pain, primary sensory neurons, functional diseases
