Abstract:
“Green ICT” has often been referred to as anoxymoron. In contrast, we argue here that technological developments have enabled data centres to make significant reductions in their energy usage over the past 3-4 years. In addition, strategic use of ICT can facilitate energy reduction through behavioural change such as travel replacement. The use of ICT to support dematerialisation is more equivocal, however.
