Abstract:
We develop a technique based on Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) for suggesting computing equipment upgrades to a data center that causes least possible efficiency degradation to its cooling system. We use an abstract airflow model of the data center in order to assess the thermal impact of the added equipment. In this analysis we use CFD air flow models of data center, where frequent equipment upgrades to the equipment are frequently occurred, to quantify the efficiency to the cooling system. Then, we employ Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) that is a nonlinear optimization technique to find the optimum upgrade for the given data center layout and for the given equipment heat dissipation characteristics.
