Abstract: Previous research has adapted the stresscoping theory by Lazarus [1] to the innovation context to examine ways in which way situational perceptions of individuals determine their innovative behaviors such as idea generation and idea implementation. The present paper examines whether situational perceptions and innovate behaviors depend differentially on individual characteristics of innovators such as their motivation, task-specific knowledge, and emotions. We proposed and tested 6 hypotheses with a real life sample of 274 middle managers of North American organizations. The results support the hypotheses. Consequences for innovation management, personnel selection and leadership as well as future research will be discussed.
