Managing Medical Professionals in the Digital Age: The Case of English Primary Care

Abstract: In the context of rising costs governments globally are increasingly preoccupied with obtaining value from health care expenditures. As part of this process, the use of financial incentives to improve the quality of care provided is becoming increasingly popular. In England, health care is funded from taxation and hospital doctors are employed by the National Health Service. However, primary care doctors are independent contractors, who own their businesses.
