Abstract: This study aimed to determine the differences in between Finnish and American managers by examining managers’ personality structures. Logical explanations were sought from cultural dimensions. The goal of this study was to answer the research question: Can culture explain why certain types of people become managers in Finland and U.S.? More knowledge of these relations can enable HRM to better built more high performance organizations.Global Leadership and Organizational Behavior Effectiveness Research Program’s cultural dimensions are applied in this study. Personality of managers was measured with Myers-Briggs Type Indicator; there were 1187 observations in Finland and 37513 in U.S. Earlier studies of personality, leaders and culture are shortly viewed.Personality structures’ distributions were statistically compared and significant differences were found. For example; Extraversion, Sensing and Judging, were overrepresented amongst Finnish managers, and Introversion, Intuitivity and Perception American managers. Findings can be logically explained with different cultural dimensions; especially with differences in Uncertainty avoidance, Performance orientation, Assertiveness, Future Orientation, Power Distance and Humane orientation. Implications to recruiting and leadership development are discussed.
