Abstract: The purpose of this research was to examine the espoused competencies of the human resource (HR) function in the literature and to highlight the changing nature of the HR function. Using 51 articles on HR competencies and the HR function from 1990-2012; the current study used computerized text-mining, content analysis software to analyze the themes, competencies and changes discussed in the literature from Business Source Premier Database. Our results demonstrated the changes from functional HR competencies to a more strategic interest in how the HRM functions can be used strategically. We discuss the implications for theory and practice of competencies in HRM.
