Abstract:
Innovation enables companies to attain consistent organic growth that brings benefits to stakeholders. Design thinking approach in innovation has been emerged to be an alternative to technological development and market research path in order to generate competitive and successful product or service in the market place. Design driven innovation (DDI) combines functional and semantic dimensions to introduce new products or services into the market.Previous research has recently revealed practices of design driven innovation in various industries. However, little is known to the extent that creative companies practice design driven innovation in Indonesia. In order to keep competitive, creative industries should be able to internalize innovative capabilities into their business process that add value to their products and services. This paper draws on dynamic capabilities and complex adaptive system perspectives in an effort to specify the nature of design driven innovation in creative industries that explore the capabilities necessary to perform design driven innovation. A theoretical framework is proposed to explain how those theoretical perspectives could help in developing design-driven innovation capability in creative industries. The research is expected to contribute to a new knowledge for creative industries in increasing their competitiveness through innovation.
