Business model innovation is influenced by relationships developed by company with different types of entities. Therefore, the aim of the paper is to identify the role of business relationships for business model innovation. The aim has been achieved in form of a conceptual paper presenting an exploratory research which adopted deductive approach. Taking into consideration the undertaken study a few results should be mentioned. Firstly, this paper sheds a new light on the nature of BMI. By distinguishing between two types of companies (company starting to operate in the market and company already operating in the market for some time) a thorough analysis of BMI characteristics has been delivered. It revealed a complex nature of BMI which hardly subjects to any attempt of generalization. Secondly, BMI process has been divided into stages and described in detail. Thirdly, in a complex manner, role of three different types of entities (buyer, supplier and competitor) for BMI have been characterized. The manner in which nature of mutual relationship determines the input received by the company from each of the entities is influencing BMI has been described. Such knowledge is useful not only for researchers but also for business practitioners who can take it into consideration when making decisions concerning BMI and cooperation with external entities.
