Abstract: Roberts v Sea-Land Services provides a case illustration of fastening language to the interpretation of law. By analyzing the oral argument transcript and Opinion, this study analyzes contested claims revolving around the meaning of “award.” Rules are derived from the Supreme Court’s management of rhetorical variables of referent interpretation.
