Abstract: The objectives of this study are threefold: 1) to identify the types of psychological problems that Facebook users experience; 2) to propose a unidimensional measurement scale that comprehensively encompasses the characteristics of these types; and 3) to identify personal characteristics (e.g., self-esteem, narcissism, need for popularity and sociability) that affect such problematic use.
Through a second-order confirmatory factor analysis, 7 factors consisting of 29 questions were extracted, and a 7-item unidimensional scale was developed. This study also found that self-esteem and need for popularity had significant impacts on the problematic use of Facebook, while narcissism and sociability did not. Theoretical and practical implications were discussed.
