Abstract: In general, this research aims to analyze the influence of the internet activities forum thread as the modern public sphere in political participation in the Indonesian presidential election of 2014 (PEMILU RI 2014). In the process, there is special purpose to determine the role of social media as a means for communication and discussion in a democracy. Researcher use the term "Modern Public Sphere", because this virtual realm of discussion, in accordance with the concept of the public sphere which was first proposed by Jürgen Habermas, in which social media can act as a media democratization, participatory, and alternatives to be able to conduct social and political change. The end result of this explanatory research is the causal relationship between the activity of the Internet forum thread as modern public sphere to political participation in the Indonesian general election of 2014. This research approached quantitatively through an online survey conducted on KASKUS users who participate in forums that discuss about the PEMILU RI 2014. Its significance is to contribute to the study of communication science, in this case related to the study of communication in new media, particularly in the political themes and democracy. Practically, the results of this study are also expected to be used by communications practitioners and politicians in planning and communication strategies to educate the public about politics.
