Abstract:
This study explores the recent media boom in the northeast region of India which is popularly known as ‘seven sisters’ because of its common interest which bounds these tiny states together amidst its diversity and plurality. This region is also perceived as troubled periphery by the outside world. This state comprises of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura The study is focused around Guwahati which is the virtual capital of the entire Northeast region. Presently there are about 23 dailies in Guwahati alone, half of which are Assamese language newspapers, while English dailies such as The Times of India and The Telegraph are distributed in the whole of Northeastern states from Guwahati. There has been an increased in the number of private television news channel operating from Guwahati. This is an analytical study on the functioning of media organizations in Assam. It looks at the conflict of interest which arises because of ownership pattern of the media organization in the form of political lobbying by television channels and irresponsible reporting to create sensationalism. It also examines the discussions and views generated by local journalists, academicians and critics on the issues of ethical standards of news reporting in the light of some of the recent controversial issues that have stirred a hornet’s nest in the state regarding reportage of news both amidst the media professionals and the public
