Abstract: Based on attitude subsystem within the theoretical framework of Appraisal Theory, this study analyzes the distribution of affect, judgment and appreciation resources and its characteristics, causes and its value to the theme subjects in the BBC Documentary “Designed in China” by using qualitative and quantitative analysis methods. The study found that the proportion of appreciative resources is the highest in the use of attitude resources of documentary text, and then judgment resources and affect resources follow. By applying these attitude resources, the evaluation attitude of each theme subject in the text is more clear, and the text expression is also more vivid. In addition, the documentary text has a high degree of objectivity in the description and explanation of technique and products, and most of them are positive evaluations. The evaluation of China includes some negative comments on China's human rights and freedom, which is not beneficial to the establishment and spread of China's positive image. Therefore, an objective and critical attitude should be adopted when watching such kind of documentaries. Besides, the media of China are supposed to make full use of resources to strengthen the establishment and spread of China's positive image.
