Abstract: According to the theory of conceptual metaphors, metaphors are not just ornamental devices used in rhetorical style, but cognitive instruments that we live by, reflecting and constructing the conceptual system of human beings. Conceptual metaphors can be found in nearly every aspects of mechanical properties of materials. They are important cognitive instruments in this area and deeply influence people’s way of thinking. This paper lists some examples of conceptual metaphors in this area, analyze the type and functions of them, give linguistic evidence for conceptual metaphor research, and provide reference for the term naming within this field in the future.
