Abstract: Some noun phrases with temporal meanings can function as time adverbial phrases in Arabic grammar as they occur in other languages. When these adverbial phrases are located between two sentences they can grammatically function as clause linking connectives. This kind of grammaticalization process reflects the on-going change of clause linkage type : from parataxis to hypotaxis. And this grammatical change tends to reflect the floating move from colloquial oriented varieties and styles to prescriptive oriented ones on the multiglossic continuum of Arabic language. This kind of change can be mostly triggered by the prescriptive assumption. This is a kind of ideology-induced language change, setting aside whether this is a characteristic which the traditional analysis of Arabic language has demonstrated. This research is based on the descriptive analysis of spoken varieties from the field data of Palestinian colloquial Arabic.
