Abstract: Through analyzing the development of poetry in both western countries and China, the contention and compromise between sound and vision can be clearly seen. The essay detects the similar developing road and dynamo for western and Chinese poems: In the beginning of poetry, sound overweighed vision; In the prosperity of poetry, sound contended and compromised with vision; In modern poetry, vision is overwhelming sound. Therefore, a conclusion can be safely drawn through the diachronic comparison between western poems and Chinese poems that poetry development is always driven by the contention between sound and vision, no matter in western countries or China.
