Abstract: Learning apps are becoming ubiquitous in and out of the classroom. While the number of ESL learning apps has been increasing dramatically, not much information is available for teachers and learners to evaluate the quality of these apps. The purpose of this study is to explore ESL learning apps recommended by previous research and investigate the current ESL app evaluation criteria in existing literature. Findings show there is a limited number of research on ESL learning apps, and these apps mostly focus on listening, pronunciation and vocabulary. There is also a lack of research on app evaluation tools. To fill this gap, the researchers adopted a comprehensive app evaluation checklist based on the existing literature that is going to be used to evaluate highly recommended iTunes and Google Play apps. The findings of this study help guide educators, teachers, and individual learners when selecting quality, well-designed and productive apps.
