Abstract: This paper presents a comprehensible analysis of Chinese annual catchwords formation based on fifty network catchwords from 2011 to 2015 from the perspective of semantics, homophony, abbreviation, Internet-related morpheme and borrowed words. The results show that semantic formation is the major way of catchwords formation. Bi-syllable and tri-syllable catchwords, as well as catchwords from political and economic areas are increasing in recent years.
