Abstract: Recent years have seen considerable increasing interest in young children learning language. In China, there has been a tendency to lower the age at which school children began to learn a language, since it is believed that the earlier a child starts learning languages, the greater the ultimate achievement will be. But antithetically, the reality is not that optimistic as people have imagined. In China, lots of students beginning language acquisition as early as 6 to 7 years old, or ever young, do not show a fairly satisfactory mastery of English with their later 10+ years of persistent learning till college life. Then what’s going wrong in their learning process? This paper tends to explore the children at early age acquiring vocabulary, concentrating on an effective way of their assessment based on cognitive theory of SLA
