Abstract: The pressing need to learn the English language continues to increase in urgency that even the ulama (Arabic professionals) in the Philippines, particularly in Mindanao where thousands of them reside, find it crucial to learn it, through the special program called Certificate of Proficiency in English Language or COPEL. Basically, these adult English language learners want to be provided with the basic knowledge of the English language as a medium of communication in government, business, educational system and in achieving their career goals and objectives as scholars and missionaries. Besides, English is the language through which they would be able to access and understand the vast body of Islamic literature in English, extending from translations of the Qur’an and Collections of Ahadith to aspects as diverse as Islamic History and Economics.
Teaching adults, especially Arabic Professionals can be very challenging and worthwhile for these adult learners are practical, self-directed, independent and responsible who are also highly and instrumentally motivated to learn. An informed principled eclecticism is therefore found out to be the appropriate teaching method for them in order to ensure effective, efficient, and optimal learning among them.
