Abstract: This paper aims to reveal how politeness use is embedded in animation films. By employing both quantitative and qualitative method, the utterances by two heroines from different movies: The Wind Rises (2013) and Frozen (2013) were scrutinized. Two research questions are: (1) What kind of politeness strategies are used in the dialogue of the movies The Wind Rises (2013) and Frozen (2013) seen from perspectives of (a) on-record (baldly, positive face, negative face), (b) off-record, (c) hedge, (d) repair based on politeness theory?, (2) What are the differences and similarities between the heroines created in both Japan and the United States in terms of utilization and frequency of politeness? The result shows that American heroine and Japanese heroine have different use of politeness strategies. However, both of them mirror how their citizen operates politeness strategies. We conclude that components such as the closeness between heroine and hero as well as discourse behavior manipulate the politeness strategies therein.
