Abstract: Combined Halliday’s lasted theory of mood metaphor with politeness theory, this article analyzed the application of politeness strategies through explicitly objective mood metaphor in academic discourse. This article show that the explicitly objective variants which transformed from congruent form through projecting and rank upgrading have two functional elements: objective projecting subject and explicit upgrading structure. In the case of the subject, it can generate two pragmatic features, namely fuzziness and negotiability, which can achieve politeness through applying both the positive and negative strategies. With regard to structure, it can produce two characteristics: explicity and directivity, both of which can to some extend enhance the persuasiveness in the academic discourse so as to preserve the writer’s positive face, and finally realize the politeness. It is expected that this article can provide second language learners a more comprehensive understanding of mood metaphor and politeness through analyzing them from both the perspectives of pragmatic and systemic functional grammar.
